Stretching along the northwest coast, the Ayres is the island's most significant area of coastal heathland and dunes. It feels wild and remote, characterized by a carpet of lichen, gorse, and marram grass. As a designated National Nature Reserve, it is a haven for biodiversity, particularly ground-nesting birds and rare insects.
A Visitor Centre (Nature Centre) is open seasonally to explain the unique geology.
The terrain is flat and mostly accessible via boardwalks and sandy paths, making it ideal for gentle walking. It is also one of the island's premier Dark Sky Discovery Sites — on a clear night, the Milky Way is often visible to the naked eye.
