Castletown, Isle of Man | Directions
Description

Type: Town
Population: Approx. 3,100 (2021 Census)

Castletown, located in the south of the Isle of Man, is one of the island’s oldest towns and its former capital. Rich in medieval and maritime heritage, it is best known for Castle Rushen, one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Europe, which dominates the town centre. The harbour area, traditional limestone architecture, and cobbled streets create a charming historic atmosphere.

As a key administrative centre until the 19th century, Castletown retains its institutional character with heritage sites such as the Old Grammar School, the Nautical Museum, and the Old House of Keys. Its compact size makes it highly walkable, and visitors can explore a blend of attractions, seaside views, and cosy cafes all within easy reach.

Castletown is also home to the island’s southern train terminus and lies close to Ronaldsway Airport, making it an accessible base or day-trip destination. Its balance of deep history and seaside charm makes it one of the island’s must-see towns for visitors and a peaceful residential spot for locals.
