Set on St Patrick’s Isle and connected to the mainland by a causeway, the red sandstone ruins of Peel Castle are the most evocative sight on the Isle of Man.
The site has been a place of worship and fortification for millennia, housing the ruins of the 11th-century Cathedral of St German and an ancient round tower. It is famously the home of the Moddey Dhoo, a legendary black dog said to haunt the castle guards.
While less intact than Castle Rushen, its rugged, wind-swept setting makes it a photographer’s dream, particularly at sunset. Visitors can walk the perimeter walls, view the cannons overlooking the bay, and descend into the crypts.
