Castle Street, Castletown, Isle of Man, IM9 1LD | Directions
Description

Dominating the centre of the island's former capital Castletown, Castle Rushen is regarded as one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Europe. Built for a Norse King in roughly 1200 AD, it has served as a royal fortress, a mint, a prison, and the seat of government.

Unlike many ruins, Rushen is remarkably intact; visitors can cross the drawbridge, explore the furnished chambers of the Lord of Mann, and climb the spiral staircases to the ramparts for panoramic views over Castletown and the harbour. The castle is atmospheric and complex, featuring a medieval courtroom, a working 16th-century clock (gifted by Queen Elizabeth I), and murder holes used for defence.

It is the definitive Manx heritage site.
