Standing sentinel over the entrance to the island's main harbour, the Douglas Head Lighthouse is a masterpiece of Victorian engineering and a defining feature of the Manx coastline.
The current structure was built in 1857 by the legendary Stevenson family (relatives of author Robert Louis Stevenson) and its gleaming white tower is often the very first landmark visitors spot when arriving by ferry in Douglas. Perched on the rugged cliffs, the stark white architecture provides a stunning contrast against the dark slate rock and deep blue Irish Sea.
While the interior is automated and closed to the public, the surrounding coastal path offers spectacular vantage points, particularly at sunrise when the tower is silhouetted against the lighting up of Douglas Bay.
