Standing at the northernmost tip of the Isle of Man, the Point of Ayre Lighthouse is the oldest working light on the island, first lit in 1818.
The landscape here feels distinct from the rest of the island, a dynamic, shifting spit of shingle and sand dunes where the fierce currents of the Solway Firth meet the Irish Sea. It is a place of wide, open horizons, making it spectacular for sunrise photography and stargazing. Visitors can walk along the shingle banks, spot seals bobbing in the surf, and observe the resident Artic Terns.
The lighthouse itself (painted with distinctive red and white bands) is closed to the public, but the surrounding beach and heathland offer miles of accessible walking.
